Brandy Alexander

Seriously guys, this song makes me weep. Some serious bawling going around here.

If you don’t know who Brandy Alexander is, you really should get reading Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk, the same guy who wrote Fight Club.

I am not really sure if being someone’s Brandy Alexander is a good or bad thing; if it’s a veiled insult (Veiled, get it? veil) or a compliment. I don’t know. I want to think it’s a sort of compliment, but I guess it’s one of those things that are open to interpretation.

I want to crawl back to bed and think for a while.

Seriously, you guys…

I simply don’t get it. I swear, I’ve given this some serious thoughts and I really, really don’t get it:

Of all the people I’ve seen on my social networks who happen to “hate” (or whatever) Justin Bieber, most (if not all) of them claim to hate him cause “Man! He looks like a girl!!!”.

I. Simply. Do. Not. Buy. It.

Every time I say “Well, that’s a very stupid reason to hate him and have such a strong opinion on him, I mean, I look like a girl, and I don’t see people saying ‘Oh, God! I wish you never existed in the first place!” they start to mumble something about his lyrics being dumb pop bubblegum, and how shameful it would be to actually like him, and such.

And you wanna know what? I. Still. Don’t. Buy. It.

Year after year you hear countless of exploitative, catchy pop songs that make absolutely no sense. Seriously, you guys… Neither “Call me, Maybe” “Just Dance” “Moves like Jagger” “International Love” nor any other like this deserves an award in eloquence and clever wording, and that’s from a girl who is a die-hard Lady Gaga fan. So what makes Justin Bieber so different that deserves the hate of every boy and many girls?

I’m gonna tell you what: Gender Binary. That’s what.

The gender binary is the classification of sex and gender into two distinct, opposite and disconnected forms of masculine and feminine. It is one general type of a gender system. It can describe a social boundary that discourages people from crossing or mixing gender roles, or from creating other third (or more) forms of gender expression altogether.

The Almighty Wikipedia

With this I am not trying to say that Justin Bieber is (or isn’t) Trans*, intersex, or any other gender. He might or might not be, and that’s all his business. What I am trying to say is that the problem with Gender Binary is that it creates such a great fear and hate of anything that even remotely falls out of the binary that traditional gender roles won’t even allow us to notice. Were you born a boy? Act like one, wear your clothes and hair like one, and don’t do anything remotely associated with a girl-behavior. Were you born a girl? Be girly-girl and by all means act like a god-damned lady. So if a boy/girl dares to cross even a little bit, they are stigmatized and made fun of.

Gender binary is what makes most people dislike Bieber with such passion. His songs might be really, really, particularly bad; but if the first thing that comes to your mind is “He looks like a girl”, you’re not thinking for yourself, but reacting to society’s general idea of gender normalcy.

I would even dare to say that if you hate the guy and you can’t even think of a reason why, this is the one, and you have no idea.

Whenever I explain all of this to my friends and people who have expressed these feelings, they always end up saying “You’re not gonna make me like him” and, please trust me on this one, I am not even trying. I am urging you to think. I actually dislike the guy, not as a performer (For which I couldn’t care less, but I am subjected to pop culture, therefore I’ve caught myself mindlessly singing “Baby” once or twice), but as a person. Wanna know why? He has such an internalized misogyny, he doesn’t even notice, he lives and breathes his white male privilege so carelessly, that he very non chalantly, goes on and says “I don’t believe in abortion. It’s like killing a baby” and when talking about rape “Everything happens for a reasonClicky-clicky.

Also, I am not saying that if you dislike him, you are policing his gender; you can dislike the guy for whatever reason you want, even if you actually dislike his look because of his look, not because of its implications. Beware people. If “He looks like a girl” is your best argument, you’re implying that being a girl is a bad or degrading thing to be, and I can assure you, there are a million worst things to be called; cause I am a girl, and I see nothing wrong on my gender, or even running, throwing, walking, yelling, crying, dancing, or talking like a girl.
